Survivor in a Day

Outwit.  Outplay.  Outlast.

Survivor-in-a-Day is an annual Teen Summer Reading event here at JPL.  Each year it gets better.  Each year it gets harder.  Do you have what it takes to be the sole survivor? Find out by playing jpl's 5th annual survivor in a day game.

Get to the library by 8PM on Friday, August 14th, and plan to stay until about 6:00 PM Saturday. Bring a blanket if you wish, but no
pillows, books, cell phones, electronics, toys, makeup, ..... Or really, anything. Plan on roughing it!

You'll get tickets to spend at the teen summer reading store just for playing, but you'll get even more for bringing a friend. And more for bringing two friends. Bringing ten friends? You're going to be getting a LOT of tickets to spend.

FAQs

Do I have to stay the night to play?
Yes

I have very sensitive skin, can I bring sunscreen?
Yes, if you must, but no other personal care products- not even your toothbrush!

My parents insist that I contact them every few hours, so I really need my cell phone. You'll let ME keep MY cell phone, right?
Wrong. Show this to your parents. Suggest they come check on you throughout the night and day -- or volunteer to chaperone.  But absolutely no phones! There. Those who can't survive one day without their phone aren't survivor material! While we are at it, let your parents know that there will be adult supervision all night and all day. That should help.

I have Saturday morning chores. Can I leave to do them and come back?
You can come back to watch, but not play and not be on the jury. Plan ahead. Do your chores early.

I have to babysit for a few hours on Saturday.  Can I bring the kids?
Sorry, no.  I mean, really, if you are sweating it out in an endurance challenge, and little Joshua falls and scrapes his knee, who do you think is going to do your job?

I'm a really picky eater (or have loads of food alergies) -- can I bring my own food?
Of course... NOT! Your choices here are to skip eating or choke down what you don't like just for the energy value. If you aren't healthy enough to skip a couple of meals, you shouldn't play the game.

What happens if I get voted out of my tribe?
Then you become crew, and will be on the jury to vote for the sole survivor.

Why would I want to stay if I was voted off?
Because crew/jury members are treated very well. They get comfy hangouts, cool drinks, lots of good food (and good junk food) and really, don't you want to make sure that the jerk who schemed to get you voted off doesn't become the sole survivor?

I won last year. Can I play again?
Yes! And bring all of your friends to play too!

What does the sole survivor win?
That is always a secret. Past prizes have been either valuable and desireable or not. One sole survivor won only a watermelon, another won 25.00 cash plus cool stuff. (and the survivor who won the watermelon was quite happy with the prize!) We could pour a lot of precious library resources into the prize, but really, it's the title of sole survivor that counts!

Who can play?
Just like every other teen summer reading event, you can play if you will be going into AT LEAST seventh grade and have not yet turned twenty.
